A close-up photograph of an ant was sent in as a submission to the 48th annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition — and the results are freaky.

The tight shot of the tiny insect, captured by Dr. Eugenijus Kavaliauskas of Taurage, Lithuania, shows the ant’s beady red eyes, angry expression and what appears to be long, sharp teeth.

Yet the intricate snapshot that has stirred up so much conversation and shock on social media didn’t place in the Small World competition.

Instead, Nikon’s first-place winner, Grigorii Timin and Dr. Michel Milinkovitch of the University of Geneva, presented a detailed photo of the embryonic hand of a Madagascar giant day gecko — showing the complete internal structure in vibrant color.

"Masterfully blending imaging technology and artistic creativity, Timin utilized high-resolution microscopy and image-stitching to capture this species of Phelsuma grandis day gecko, " Nikon said in a press release.

In our last post, we gave some general tips on obtaining better macro shots in the field. In this post, we’ll look at some technical considerations and equipment that make it easier to produce quality macro photos of insects.

We recommend that you capture all images in RAW format, or, at a minimum RAW plus JPG. JPGs give you instant gratification and a good rendering of your photo. But, if you ever want to enhance your insect photos by removing shadows, lowering highlights, or further processing a photo in Lightroom or similar software, you will get much better results with a RAW version of your photo.

Point And Shoot Cameras For Nature Photography / 2021 Reviews

“Macro” simply means that, if the lens is as close to the subject as is possible while keeping the subject in focus (usually a few inches), the image will be projected onto the sensor at life size (or larger). “Life size” is also referred to as 1:1.

Based on our experience and what we see in other photographer’s bags, the three lenses favored by insect photographers who use full-frame cameras are the Nikkor 105-millimeter (mm) for Nikon mounts and the Canon EF 100 mm and MP-E 65 mm for Canon. These are all excellent (and expensive) lenses capable of producing publication-grade images. For micro four-thirds bodies, many favor the featherweight, reasonably priced, and extremely sharp Zuiko 60 mm macro, which is what we use.

Two of our favorite sites for lens reviews are Digital Photography Review and Thom Hogan’s website, Sans Mirror. These cover the features of the many lenses that are available for different camera formats.

Before investing in an expensive lens, consider renting one. Lens rental companies ship in a returnable box, and you can rent for just a couple of days. The cost can be surprisingly low: LensRental.com is a well regarded company that we’ve used recently.

Nikon, Canon, Olympus, and other major-brand “prime” lens (meaning they do not zoom) are relatively simple, and there is little that can go wrong with them. We have purchased used ones with success.

We humans tend to look at eyes. Getting an insect’s eyes in focus can help create an interesting macro shot. This beautiful pentatomid was conveniently feeding on a citrus fruit outside the dining hall at Archbold Biological Station in Florida. f/10, 1/125th, flash. Photo by Lou Staunton.

How To Take Extremely Close Up Macro Shots Of Things Like Insects

Using flash is obviously essential at night and in low light. If used correctly, it should be virtually impossible to distinguish between a photo taken with flash and one taken with natural light. This photo of a dipteran feeding on stinkhorn fungus was taken using flash at La Selva Research Station, Costa Rica. f/8, 1/125th, flash. Photo by Jeremy Squire.

In general, almost any digital camera made in the last 10 years that accepts interchangeable lenses is capable of producing suitable images for reproduction when equipped with a good macro lens. Many “bridge” cameras without interchangeable lenses, but with a macro mode, are also quite capable. Check reviews specifically for macro information.

After using full-frame cameras for many years, we realized the micro four-thirds (M43) cameras are more suited to our style of insect work because they’re more compact and weigh substantially less than full-frame cameras. This allows us to shoot with one hand, freeing the other hand to steady the subject or hold branches out of the way.

Macro ring lights produce a low level of light and are used to illuminate a subject in the same way as flash. They are inexpensive and usually powered by two or four AA batteries; they use LEDs and may be somewhat useful for daytime macro. We’ve used them but don’t recommend them—we find that an inexpensive, single, camera-mounted flash unit emits far more light and produces better results.

One benefit to a twin flash head is that you can regulate the light levels independently and throw more or less light on one side of your subject. A properly diffused twin flash in experienced hands can produce a beautifully lit insect photo. However, in field photography, they have a major drawback: The twin arms and flash heads are bulky enough that it’s easy to unintentionally bump a branch or clump of leaves and spook your subject or send it skittering to the ground. We, therefore, recommend against them for field work unless you’re prepared to move with great care and patience when approaching your subject.

This is our preferred method for shooting in the field. The flash sits back from the lens, but still projects enough light to saturate the area in front of the lens with light. This configuration allows us to get close to subjects with the least risk of bumping foliage or scaring bugs. It also allows us to better diffuse our flash, which is a greater challenge with ring lights or two flash heads.

Insects are challenging to photograph because their exoskeletons and wings can be highly reflective. From the camera’s viewpoint, highly reflective areas on the subject can throw bright light from the flash right back at the sensor, resulting in overexposed or “blown out” areas (meaning there is no detail or color, and they appear white in the image), or, more commonly, a “harsh” look that lacks clarity of detail. And, of course, you want clarity of detail for your entomological photos.

Unfortunately, it is beyond the scope of this article to give instructions on building a diffuser, but Jeremy offers instructions for a quick and easy DIY flash diffuser on his website. With a bit of experimentation, you can completely eliminate hot spots and blown out areas.

Teacher Job Description - Digital Art Qualifications For Teachers Uk Government

The quality of any education system is highly dependent on the quality of its teachers. Research has shown how vital universities are in equipping teachers with the theory and the principles they need to do their jobs well.

General Certificate Of Secondary Education

In England, universities are currently responsible for 100% of initial teacher education (ITE) at undergraduate level and around 70% of postgraduate courses. And evidence from the Department for Education itself indicates that this approach works. Between 2018 and 2020, all the institutions that offer ITE were rated good or outstanding by Ofsted, the UK government’s quality assurance agency.

Despite this impressive record, a major review of ITE - or as the government prefers to call it, ITT (initial teacher training) - is underway. In July 2021, the department for education published the ITT market review report. The public consultation on its recommendations has been notably short.

This review continues a decade-long trend, shifting the responsibility for ITE away from universities and towards schools. Specialists have highlighted how selectively research has been used to justify this approach. The difference in nomenclature between the university label (ITE) and the government label (ITT) for how teachers are taught is not just semantic. It highlights a fundamental conflict of approach: should teachers be educated or trained?

Reimagining Our Futures Together: A New Social Contract For Education

Between 2018 and 2020, the universities in the UK that offer teacher training and education were all highly rated by Ofsted. aberCPC / Alamy Stock Photo

Since Michael Gove was education secretary, the UK government has increasingly pushed for teacher training to happen in schools. The ITT market review is the latest in a series of attempts by the Department for Education to limit the role of universities.

This latest review makes several recommendations that are not based on national or international evidence. Teacher education specialists say they risk destabilising the sector and diluting the intellectual standing of the profession. For instance, if these reforms go through, they could potentially drive out prestigious universities, including the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford.

Best English Teacher Cv Example

Others cite serious concerns around university independence. The government wants any institution that trains teachers to go through an accreditation process for quality control - even those universities that have been doing it for years. Conversely, it would open up teacher training to multi-academy trusts and other groups of schools which have relatively little experience of training teachers, as well as training programmes, which have been criticised for framing teaching as a career stepping stone - and not a destination.

What Are The Basic Requirements For Teaching English In Spain? - Digital Art Qualifications For Teachers Uk Government

The changes the review suggests also risk placing more demands - and greater costs - on schools. Teaching staff who mentor student teachers on placement, for example, will see their workload doubled.

This review also recommends creating an ITE curriculum that all teacher-training institutions would have to follow. This threatens individual universities’ ability to respond to local needs. Currently, they can devise bespoke teacher education programmes which can make a difference in rural areas, coastal regions and areas of deprivation, where recruiting teachers is often challenging, though more research is required on this.

How To Become A Pt Teacher?: Career As A P.ed. Teacher

The Department for Education has, itself, admitted that it is moving quickly. This has also raised concerns. The review was concluded in six months, without any meaningful consultation with either universities or schools. It was published just as the summer term ended. And the public consultation was scheduled to last only seven weeks. The government’s own code of practice requires 12.

By undermining university involvement in ITE, the reforms will erode the intellectual basis of the profession - the very feature of high-performing education systems across the world. What then is this dispute between policymakers and education specialists based on?

Major Teaching Reform In England Will Erode The Intellectual Basis Of The Profession - Digital Art Qualifications For Teachers Uk Government

Recent educational policy in England, much like in the US, has focused on universal educational excellence. It avoids acknowledging the impact systemic social injustice and structural inequality have on how well children do at school. Instead, it focuses on notions of “what works” and “best practice” in relation to teacher education.

Teaching Unions In England Begin Talks With Government As Strikes Paused

The government’s approach draws a unidirectional line of influence from schools to society. It assumes that the former can compensate for any shortcomings in the latter, fostering undue and unrealistic expectations that schools and teachers are able to fix society.

The government prioritises what specialists call an “evidence-based”, “what works” approach to teaching teachers. This means that teachers are encouraged to make decisions about their pupils’ learning based on what has worked for others, but not necessarily on what the children in front of them actually need. They are discouraged from using their judgement. This focuses on what is taught in the classroom and how comes at the expense of critical considerations around why it is taught in the first place. As teacher education specialist John Loughran has noted, that “why” is what enhances pupils’ learning. And in its one-size-fits-all approach, the government fails to recognise the distinctive contributions that pupils bring to their own learning.

Several key organisations involved in ITE have issued statements challenging this review. They insist that the problems that the government has identified in the way teachers are taught could be resolved in collaboration with universities - not by excluding them.

The Ultimate Guide To Copyright, Creative Commons, And Fair Use For Teachers, Students, And Bloggers - Digital Art Qualifications For Teachers Uk Government

What I Wish They Taught Me About Copyright In Art School

Universities are well placed to make changes to the programmes they offer via existing internal (university programme review and validation) and external (Ofsted) quality-assurance processes. And they would do so in compliance with existing or amended government ITT criteria.

Crucially, universities have the established infrastructure, the extensive resources and the research expertise, that student teachers need. They encourage students to systematically interrogate research, policy and practice, including their underlying assumptions and assertions.

It is this perspective on education – informed by critical, historical and sociological expertise – that will best equip future teachers to adapt to changes throughout their careers. Universities have a proven record of working effectively in partnership with schools, too. They know how to enable student teachers to integrate the theory they learn in lectures with the practical experience they gain in the classroom to meet the needs of a diverse population. This needs to be built on, not dismantled. If you're wondering 'what do I need to teach English in Spain?', you're in luck! American English teachers (with their highly prized American accents) are in high demand in Spain, but most private schools will not go to the trouble or expense of processing a work visa. However, Americans can

Earlier today, we watched Emelia Hartford take an exciting spin behind the wheel of a 2023 Corvette Z06, which she says is the first press version running around North America.

After all her amazing work on her own orange and white Stingray over the past few years, we wonder what she’ll do to make her own Z06 – when it arrives – run even faster.

In the meantime, though, we’re left to meditate on this series of 10 renderings – offering up different angles of a custom Z06 – that was created by Shashank Das, also known as sdesyn on social media, where we spotted his efforts on Instagram.

Sdesyn shares how he would spec out his own Z06, including a custom set of headlights, a two-tone paint job with a blacked-out hood, a partial carbon fiber aerodynamic kit with red accents on the front and rear spoilers, similar red stripes on the hood and top, contrasting vertical stripes on the sides of the body, and a set of bronze-finished Vossen LC2-C1 wheels that somehow remind us of the stock ’84 wheels.

Explains Sdesyn: “I love how looked on @gabeflorido’s C8 so I had to put them on for this Z06 build. However, here they’re finished in a shiny bronze.”

He says his headlight treatment “could be a cool one-off if Chevrolet ever does something like this” and points out that the splashes of red are a must-have “because nothing says sporty like some bright red accents.”

So while we wait, let’s check out this new rendering of the C8 Corvette Z06 as imagined by our friends at the Corvette Forum.

We are currently in the camp that believes the C8 Z06’s design will be closer to the C8.R race car than the C8 Stingray, and we really like several of the design features on this rendering from Corvette Forum artist Pouria Savadkouei. Buyers of the C8 Corvette Z06 will want a design that stands apart from the Stingray sibling and that starts upfront on this rendering with a redesigned fascia that resembles the C8.Rs face. It’s sort of a reverse design than the Stingray and that, along with the NACA duct and frunk vents, would provide immediate identification when viewing the car from the front.

As the Z06 is expected to be wider, there is a black-trimmed vent on the front quarter panels. The wider rear end which seems to open up the side scoops even more. The Forum’s designer went with a similar shape of the side scoop from the C8.R as well and actually chose to mount the Z06 emblem on the scoop’s trim behind the doors.

A larger front splitter helps keep the front of the car balanced while small winglets route the air along the sides of the car and into the dual scoops which provide engine cooling on the upper portion while the lower side scoops feed air to the rear brakes. Flat side rockers run front to rear between the wheel arches and on the rear is a similar C7 Z06 level three rear spoiler with the wickerbill.

Some other design cues from the C8.R includes the exterior paint scheme done in “traditional” Corvette Racing Yellow and featuring aspects of the Silver on the front and rear facias. We really like that…the red covered side mirrors not so much. We know that the Z06 models will have their own wheels and we are hoping these five-spoke carbon fiber wheels recently spied on eBay will make future renderings.

Like our previous C8 Z06 render from gabe.design, this one has a bold yet subtle design that leaves room for Chevrolet’s designers to go even further on the ZR1 or the mythical ZORA models that will be coming down the road.

I was merely 9 years old when I first saw her. I had gotten a Nintendo DSi for Christmas, and after discovering that I could do more than just play “Kirby Super Star Ultra, ” I fell into a rabbit hole of online content. You see, DSis came with a program called Flipnote Studio, an animation program that allows you to hand-draw sequential animations and input your own audio. You could even post them to the program’s built-in social media platform, Flipnote Hatena. Through Hatena, I discovered all sorts of new things as a child, from music to anime. What most permeated my experience on Hatena, though, was an unknown, twin-pigtailed anime character. I saw her everywhere, in eerie, dramatic animations or cutesy, joyful ones. Almost every time she was accompanied by robotic-sounding songs; I instantly became mesmerized by the sound — the voice of the singer was energetic and girlish but sounded automated, inhuman and always represented as a blue-haired anime girl. These were my first experiences with the iconic pop legend Hatsune Miku.

So who is, or what is, Hatsune Miku? She is, in essence, a mascot. Miku is a Vocaloid software, an installable voicebank with which you can add vocals to music. She is often called a “singing computer, ” but she is by no means the first instance of this. The first “singing computer” was used in 1961 by the IBM 7094’s speech synthesizing technology — you may have heard this before in “2001: A Space Odyssey” (and if you want to hear Miku singing with the IBM, check this out). However, what differentiates Miku from your average speech synthesis programs is her personification. She was created by Crypton Future Media Inc., who had previously created Kaito and Meiko, but Miku’s release in 2007 marked the beginning of Crypton’s “Character Vocal Series, ” which directly tied these anime personas to each voicebank. Miku’s cutesy anime look quickly gained popularity, particularly through MikuMikuDance, a fan-made 3D animation program created in 2008, which allowed users to make animations featuring the character.

Miku is a robotic singer that will never die; as long as Vocaloid exists, Miku can be used to make any sort of music and star in any music video. I’ve been listening to Vocaloid music since my Flipnote days, and I can say from experience that the breadth of Miku-based music is insane. I’ve listened to her used in metal songs, as well as modern pop takes; her voice was sampled in Ashnikko’s “Daisy 2.0.”

Cuz I Love You': Lizzo's Feel Good Album

Besides her influence in music, she serves as an internet icon (here you can see her in all her holographic glory opening for Lady Gaga). I believe that a huge reason for this is her simple yet spectacular character design. At first glance, it may seem complex; her arm warmers are covered in techy buttons and switches, and she’s got those crazy square-shaped hair ties. Designer Kei Garou was given loose instruction when creating Miku, told only to “convey the image of a singing computer.” It’s very clear through her design that she is robotic and futuristic, demonstrating artistic complexity. However, all you need to see to recognize Miku are those big, greenish-blue pigtails. Fans across the world have picked up on this, creating a spin-off character called Shiteyanyo, who exists as a simplified Miku: a floating head with blue pigtails for legs. Her signature blue color has gained such popularity over the years that you can purchase blue, Miku-themed ramen.

What works so fantastically in her design is her complete lack of characterization; Miku does not have a set personality, giving any artist that chooses to depict her total freedom. She is a blank slate, akin to cereal mascots or sports team characters. She will always be directly related to the arts, whether it’s as simple as how someone chooses to illustrate her or what key she’ll sing in.

Because of these aspects, Miku’s influence on the online art community is huge — a tweet giving testament to this went viral earlier this month, stating, “its not your skill level, or how long youve been drawing, or having gone to art school that makes you an artist. what determines whether or not youre an artist is if youve drawn hatsune miku.” The replies to this tweet are filled with fan art of the Vocaloid, each stylistically different yet recognizable. Whether it was a traditional anime-esque style or a more Pixar-looking one, those blue-green twintails were an instant giveaway. One reply designated this artistic experience as paying the “Miku tax, ” implying it as a rite of passage to artists growing up on the internet.

Fans across the world have created hundreds of interpretations of Miku over the years, altering her clothing and hairstyles to embody different aesthetics and concepts. A perfect example is “Snow Miku, ” a variant of the character that arose in 2010 for Japan’s annual Sapporo Snow Festival. Snow Miku carries all of the original Miku’s signature traits, but she is given a wintery white hue. Silhouettes of snowflakes permeate her huge pigtails, and she sports a white scarf and gloves. The design and concept for Snow Miku quickly gained popularity within the fanbase — so much so that in 2012, it was decided that “Snow Miku” would be designed via annual online art competitions. Every year, fans eagerly vote for a new Snow Miku designed by fellow fans (you can see 2023’s now-closed vote here). Though loose themes are established — 2023’s centers clouds and skies — there is always diversity of interpretation within designs. It’s amazing to be able to see so many fan interpretations and even more incredible to see them praised by the creators of Miku themselves — each Snow Miku that wins gets her own official figure and minifigure, as well as a custom-composed song and animated music video. The small passion project of designing a wintery Miku has shifted into a huge internet phenomenon, filled with collaborative, fan-made love and creative passion. Artists love Miku because she can push their skills, can help them to make lovable designs while playing on recognizable traits that people across the world have grown to love.

Snow Miku isn’t the only recurring Miku design. Each year, we get a new design for Miku’s anniversary (this year’s is strawberry-themed) alongside figures and merchandise. We get a new design for the Super GT, Japan’s premier motorsport race, called “Racing Miku.” New, unique figures are made for “Sakura Miku” each year, too, a pink variant with a cherry blossom theme. These, of course, are only official products; there exist dozens of variants within fan communities, as well as special designs dropped at random by figure companies. My personal favorite as of late is Kotobukiya’s “My Little Pony” Miku figure, which combines Miku herself with a miniature, pony version happily alongside her. It’s particularly incredible how well big companies receive fanworks, allowing artists everywhere to feel like they’re a part of expanding Miku’s image.

Her popularity and design have had a huge impact on my own artistic growth; after seeing Miku for the first time on Flipnote, I tried to animate her often. She was one of the first characters that I consistently drew, and in this sense, I could track my progress as an artist through drawing her. I remember struggling to draw her hair as a kid, using a ruler to measure the shapes of the twintails. Now, after drawing Miku for so long, she feels like a friend. I don’t draw her the same way every time, but there’s a sort of muscle memory in depicting her — I know what her essence is, and I get to experiment with it. It’s so much fun to see how my peers online depict her, too. Miku brings people together, helps artists to challenge themselves; she’s a pop icon, but she’s also my best friend. Over time, she’s tended to embody a character of her own, despite, and perhaps because of, her lack of personality. She’s always smiling, she’s experimental in her fashion. She has lots of friends, her favorite vegetable is a leek. These traits aren’t set in stone, but it’s the image I have come to hold of Miku after looking at so many interpretations of her. She’s almost a real person at this point. I have come to know her quite well. It’s certainly odd to attribute some of my creative journey to a singing software mascot, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.Icona Pop is a Swedish synthpop duo formed in 2010 by Swedish artists Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt. Their music is influenced by electro house, indie pop, and according to Jawo, also punk. You can listen to their punk influence in the themes of their songs, like “I love it”, which says “I got this feeling on the summer day when you were gone, I crashed my car into the bridge, I watched, I let it burn”, and in their song phrasings, which are very punk influenced.
